Love Stories

Kat & Tom

"With all the usual first date spots shuttered, we instead met in Domino Park, a location that turned out to be perfect as a meeting place but ill-suited as a place to drink."

How we met

Our relationship, like our proposal, began outside. When we met, in August 2020, COVID had receded enough for dating to return, but not enough for bars or restaurants to be open. With all the usual first date spots shuttered, we instead met in Domino Park, a location that turned out to be perfect as a meeting place but ill-suited as a place to drink. Eagle-eyed cops fined us within seconds of cracking open our cans of lukewarm rose (accompanied by booing from our fellow park people).

That was the first of many dates held in the parks and streets of Williamsburg and Brooklyn. While we weren’t allowed to go to the cinema or dine in a restaurant for much of our early relationship, with hindsight it meant we spent more time talking and spending time together than we would have without the pandemic.

So 2 years on, it feels like we have been together much longer. We live together in Williamsburg, with that original drinks ticket framed on the wall, and as of last week we are also now happily engaged.

The Proposal

The proposal took place on the roof of our apartment building – a location chosen for the views of the city where we fell in love, its al fresco yet private environment where champagne drinking is allowed, and for it’s ample foliage where one can easily hide a photographer with a long lens (see photo).

Our wedding will hopefully be in 2023, and will probably be outside.

Kat and Tom embracing each other in our studio while lifts her hand to show her new engagement ring.
