Mary & Rohit

"After countless adventures exploring hidden beaches and backpacking trails, and many post-work Kona Big Waves, the rest was history."

Mary & Rohit

How We Meet

We first met at a work happy hour in San Francisco in September 2019. We bonded over our shared music taste, and Rohit promptly invited me to an Eric Clapton concert that weekend (he later admitted this was just an excuse to get my number). We became fast friends, until March 2020 threw a wrench in things. Rohit and his roommates ditched their lease in SF and moved to the Big Island of Hawaii near his parents, where he ultimately convinced me to come visit for what became almost a month-long stay. After countless adventures exploring hidden beaches and backpacking trails, and many post-work Kona Big Waves, the rest was history. We went on to date long distance for a year (communicating over shared playlists), then move in together in Lake Tahoe where my job required me to be for 2 years. In late 2023 we moved to Greenpoint, Brooklyn and have been loving it ever since.

The Proposal

When I decided to propose this fall, I knew I wanted to pop the question at the eastern shore of Maryland, a place very special to Mary Douglass, with her close family around. But I also knew MD was a tough one to get things by, and that I'd have to get creative with the engagement. After an elaborate scheme one weekend involving a 100km bike ride and a "canceled" event back in NY (complete with a fake text from the host), I suggested we stay an extra night in Maryland. I asked her to marry me on the dock behind her house at sunset that evening - without dropping the ring between the wooden boards of the dock, despite my constant fear of this leading up to it. She was completely shocked, not only by the proposal but by the ring I had picked out, which included a family diamond surrounded by two pale blue sapphires that I chose for their similarity to her eye color. We are thrilled to be getting married next December on the Big Island - back where it all began.
